People who have ISTP personality are extremely curious and enjoy having new experiences. They’re independent people and want to have the freedom to do things at their own pace. For this reason, they’re usually quite reserved and can become insensitive at times. 

As a person with ISTP personality, I kind of understand how our minds work and how stubborn we can be at times. So as I got to know more about my MBTI, there were a few anime characters that I thought had this personality type… What’s funny is that I tend to be attracted to these characters.

Here I bring ten different anime characters with ISTP personality!

ISTP personality’s overview

Often called “Virtuosos” or “The Crafters”, people with ISTP personalities love to explore new things while having first-hand experiences. They prefer to analyse new things through practical applications rather than abstract ideas. 

Virtuosos are often enigmatic people, even for those who are close to them. It’s not easy to predict their emotions or thoughts because they usually move from one subject to another. They’re friendly people but quite reserved. They’re calm but spontaneous as well. 

Virtuosos are people who enjoy their freedom and that’s why they typically have difficulty following rules or demonstrating “acceptable” behaviours. They often cross boundaries and can be deemed insensitive because they find it hard to stay attuned to people’s emotions. They tend to ignore their own emotions as well and keep their distance from them until they become overwhelming.

ISTP’s strengths

• Most of the time, ISTPs are cheerful and optimistic people that rarely get stressed out over something. They just go with the flow without worrying much about the future.
• ISTPs are imaginative and practical. They enjoy putting their ideas into action.
• ISTPs are great at dealing with crisis situations. Since they don’t mind taking physical risks, they can get their hands dirty whenever the situation calls for it.
• ISTPs are flexible and versatile, so they can switch their mindsets to fit new situations easily.

ISTP’s weaknesses

• ISTPs are pretty stubborn and considering they tend to go with the flow, they often move from one direction to another without apologising or showing empathy to others. 
• ISTPs can be insensitive because they’re logical people, therefore, they don’t make judgements based on emotions, beliefs or values.
• Although ISTPs can be easygoing, they’re introverts and prefer to keep personal matters to themselves.
• ISTPs don’t like long-term commitments because they prefer to take things easy. The sole idea of being locked into something feels oppressive or boring to them.

Anime characters with ISTP personality

1. Soul Evans – Soul Eater

Soul Evans from Soul Eater may seem unenthusiastic about everything with his laid-back attitude. But still, he proved to have great determination if the situation called for it. He’s a quick thinker and versatile, he can ideate strategies quickly after analysing the situation.

As an ISTP, Soul uses logical thinking while exploring new scenarios and avoids considering emotional factors while making decisions. Soul’s personality is difficult to get to know, as he keeps things to himself rather than sharing them with others. He often avoids dealing with his own feelings and when things get overwhelming, he ends up displaying emotions that can lead to misunderstandings.

2. Dabi – My hero Academia

In My Hero Academia anime, there are a few characters with ISTP personality, but I’d like to focus on Dabi this time. He can be seen as the unhealthy side of this MBTI type.

Dabi isn’t attached to any emotions or values while exploring things, he prefers examining things with rationality. I know his motives are strongly led by his desire for revenge, but this built his image of justice, albeit in a twisted way… This may make it look as Dabi’s decisions are chaotic and unplanned, but on closer analysis, most of his actions are carefully planned after observing his surroundings.

Dabi usually keeps most of his thoughts private and doesn’t care much about the well-being of others. Also, he never cared about repressing his emotions to avoid conflict.

3. Akiko Yosano – Bungou Stray Dogs

Akiko Yosano from Bungou Stray Dogs displays a calm and composed behaviour but can be pretty spontaneous at times. Her acts can lead to some disastrous results if she loses her temper. Yet most of the time, she can keep a relaxed demeanour regardless of how risky the situations may turn.

As an ISTP, Akiko proved to be independent and is always aware of her surroundings, approaching things rationally. She also demonstrated a great sense of adaptability whenever she and her colleagues faced challenges. 

Akiko enjoys living new experiences and she’s always curious about things that she finds attractive or interesting. Plus, she doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty whenever the situation requires it.

4. Kirito – Sword Art Online

Kirito isn’t good at expressing himself and can be quite direct with his words. For that reason, he can be seen as someone sensitive at times. 

Kirito is collected and shows no signs of distress in critical situations. He proved he could quickly adapt to new challenges or conditions without much effort while devising strategies to increase his chances of winning. He’s calm but can also be unpredictable and can jump into situations without thinking too much.

5. Princess Syalis – Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle

Is there any character that values exploring new sleeping experiences more than Princess Syalis from Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle? Because, in my opinion, there isn’t, so it’s kind of evident to me that she must be an ISTP.

Princess Syalis is never satisfied when it comes to sleeping and is always going from one place to another to find ways to improve her sleep. It doesn’t matter if she needs to face risky opponents or get her hands dirty if that will allow her to sleep comfortably. Plus, it’s pretty obvious how she enjoys being in control of all situations and whenever she feels like she’s not, she can get pretty stubborn.

6. Hak Son – Akatsuki no Yona

When I said that I’m often attracted to anime characters with ISTP personalities, I was mainly referring to Hak from Akatsuki no Yona. But even if he wasn’t an ISTP, I’d be attracted to this man… I mean, look at him, how could I not?

Hak is a quiet guy with an easygoing attitude towards others. But his enigmatic nature is not that easy to understand… As we can see in the Akatsuki no Yona anime and manga, he also has a mischievous personality because he enjoys teasing others and giving them mocking nicknames. 

Being an ISTP, Hak has a strong mindset and is confident about his skills. Although he can keep a cool mind and is excellent at coping with critical situations, he also experiences strong emotions. But he’s just too good at keeping his composure.

7. Yami Sukehiro – Black Clover

In Black Clover, Yami Sukehiro is the reckless leader of the Black Bull squad. He’s considerably powerful as well as intimidating due to his strong presence. He doesn’t mind sending his members on dangerous missions, but he does that as a way to make them exceed their limits and become stronger. So… is this his way of showing his members his love?

Yami isn’t afraid of being engaged in situations that involve physical risks or conflicts. He proved to be perceptive when facing opponents and displayed a great sense of adaptability while devising countermeasures.

8. Kohaku – Dr. Stone

I had my doubts about Kohaku being an ISTP character since she showed a kind and caring attitude. But I can’t deny that she’s curious and doesn’t mind breaking the rules, or jumping into risky situations to satisfy her curiosity. She grew fascinated by Senku’s scientific creations, even though she didn’t understand them completely…

I’ve also read that girls with ISTP personalities are rare, plus they’re often seen as tomboys… And Kohaku has a tomboyish nature, even though she won’t admit it. But I love her for that.

9. Karma Kabane – Assassination Classroom

In the beginning of Assassination Classroom, Karma Kabane stood out due to his problematic attitude and violent behaviour. But we can’t deny that he was excellent at coming up with new plans to get rid of Koro-sensei.

Whenever Karma formulated something, his logical and ambitious side came to light. Instead of analysing possibilities, he enjoyed crafting strategies with a rational approach while considering his surroundings and current situation. But he can quickly get bored if the situation seems routine or boring to him.

10. Benimaru Shinmon – Fire Force

I’ll finish this list by mentioning my favourite character from Fire Force, the captain of the Special Fire Force Company 7, Benimaru Shinmon. 

Benimaru is portrayed as someone confident and short-tempered. He enjoys his freedom and fiercely despises the dogmatic faith of the Holy Sol Temple that oppresses the free will of humans. He’s also VERY honest to the point where he’s rude to others. 

Let’s not forget that Benimaru’s decisions often stem from a sense of practical realism, plus he doesn’t understand or believe topics unless he experiences them first-hand. So ISTP it is!
