12 anime characters with blue hair

As we know, colours can be associated with a variety of meanings. In the anime world, sometimes colours are used to hint at a character’s personality or the role they’ll play in the story.

There are many colours and each of them can have different shades, as is the case with blue. Dark blue is often associated with mature, wise, responsible and calculating anime characters. While a lighter shade of blue is commonly associated with quiet, soft-spoken and introverted characters. Of course, that doesn’t apply to all characters because sometimes colours can be used just as a way to differentiate one character from others.

Here I bring twelve anime characters with blue hair!

1. Aladdin – Magi

The little Magi Aladdin from Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a kind-hearted and friendly character who’s impossible to not love.

Despite having a perverted side at times, Aladdin also proved to be wise, giving helpful insights whenever a situation requires it. He can maintain his composure and remain calm even in the most dangerous situations just to ideate the best plans or solutions to face the danger.

2. Jellal Fernandes – Fairy Tail

Jellal Fernandes

Jellal in Fairy Tail is quite an attractive character, but his personality has gradually changed throughout the story. As a kid, he was kind and compassionate, but due to certain circumstances, he became ruthless and you could even consider him one of the deadliest characters. Later, he changed his personality again because he suffered from amnesia. But once he regained his memories, Jellal became mature, intelligent and kind.

Now Jellal fits with the meaning of the colour blue as someone wise, calm and responsible perfectly.

3. Noriko Sonozaki – Kiznaiver

Kiznaiver is an anime that revolves around emotions and connections. The anime characters have different hair colours, so it’s easy to differentiate them from each other. Among them, we can find the blue-haired girl, Noriko.

Noriko isn’t known for being expressive, she’s emotionless and just speaks if necessary, but as a child, she behaved differently. She used to be cheerful and had a smile on her face most of the time.

Noriko’s current personality is the result of past experiences in which she endured excruciating pain. Due to the pain, she needs to take a medicine that nullifies all her senses.

4. Shin-Ah – Akatsuki no Yona

Shin-Ah

My favourite boy from Akatsuki no Yona, Shin-Ah… Sorry, but in my opinion, this blue-haired guy deserves all the love and happiness in this world.

Shin-Ah possesses the blood of the blue dragon deity, so I think his hair colour fits his origins amazingly. He didn’t have the best past as he was raised in isolation, hence, his social skills aren’t good and most of the time, he only communicates with others through gestures. Still, he’s gentle and cares a lot about Yona and the group, protecting them even at the risk of his life.

5. Aki Adagaki – Masamune-kun’s Revenge

anime characters with blue hair

Aki is known as the cruel princess in her school because she always rejects boys who declare their feelings for her in the most humiliating ways. But Aki isn’t a bad girl… She hurts others just because she doesn’t want to get hurt. Plus, she was waiting for her childhood crush to appear in front of her, so she couldn’t reciprocate other people’s feelings.

Aki’s childhood wasn’t the best, even though she grew up in a wealthy family… But her parents spent their days arguing and paid no attention to their daughter’s feelings. For that reason, Aki grew attached to her childhood friend Masamune (aka her crush) because he provided emotional support and was honest with her.

6. Nagisa Shiota – Assassination Classroom

Nagisa Shiota

Aside from the mischievous red-haired Karma Kabane, Nagisa is one of my favourite characters from Assassination Classroom

Nagisa is portrayed as a calm and collected student with great observation skills. Despite being kind, he also had a dark side and natural talent to be a great assassin, so don’t let his cute appearance fool you. But he was really insecure about his skills and what other people may think about him, mainly because he was raised by a mother who made him feel worthless.

7. Sayaka Maizono – Danganronpa

anime characters with blue hair

Sayaka’s title in the Danganronpa series was “Ultimate Pop Sensation”. She was portrayed as someone sweet, caring and supportive, but that was just her façade as an idol… In my opinion, she was manipulative and also extremely obsessed with her image. She was careful to not demonstrate any weaknesses or behaviours that could tarnish her reputation.

But behind her optimistic and confident façade, Sayaka was insecure and afraid of being disliked by someone. She’s also scared of being alone because she spent most of her childhood that way.

Sayaka desperately sought to have someone by her side. I guess that’s why she wanted to become an idol, even though she needed to make certain sacrifices to achieve her dream…

8. Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) – Sailor Moon

Ami Mizuno - Sailor Mercury

Ami from Sailor Moon used to be a timid girl who didn’t find it easy to make friends and hence spent most of her time studying and reading books. She’s intelligent and after befriending Usagi, her kind and sweet side came to light, even though she’s still a bit insecure.

Ami’s a gentle soul who doesn’t like conflicts, in fact, she’s the most sensitive among the Sailor Guardians.

As the Sailor Mercury, Ami’s powers are based on water and ice, so her dominant colour is blue and its different shades. Therefore, blue hair suits her splendidly.

9. Hakkai Shiba – Tokyo Revengers

Although Hakkai didn’t appear that much in Tokyo Revengers’ first season, he still caught my attention. Hakkai starts to stand out during the Black Dragon Arc, which will be adapted in the second season

Hakkai is a friendly guy, but he can become so shy if a girl he doesn’t know approaches him. He’s quite reserved and compassionate, but that wasn’t the case when he was a kid.

Hakkai experienced constant physical abuse by his brother, who wanted to “discipline” him. Due to those awful circumstances, Hakkai used to be aggressive towards other people until he met Mitsuya and changed. Now, he’s more calm and gentle.

10. Esdeath – Akame ga Kill

Esdeath

It’s not that common to find anime characters with blue hair that play an evil role in a series. Yet, among them, Akame ga Kill’s antagonist, Esdeath, stands out for her manipulative and sadistic nature.

Esdeath lived her life following her father’s philosophy, “only the strong people survive while the weak ones die”. Therefore, she only respected those she considered strong and despised the weak. She enjoyed making her victims suffer physically and also emotionally.

Although Esdeath was merciless, she also proved to be charismatic and had a compassionate side at times.

11. Milo Nekoyanagi – Sabikui Bisco

anime characters with blue hair

One of my last additions to my list of favourite anime characters with blue hair is the kind and smart “Panda-sensei”, Milo Nekoyanagi from Sabikui Bisco.

Being a doctor, Milo likes to help others, even if he doesn’t receive anything in return. He’s determined and mature, yet I can’t say he knows how to keep his composure all the time. Still, he’s clever and knows how to take full advantage of his knowledge in most cases.

12. Kazuki Aoyama – Tribe Nine

Kazuki Aoyama

Kazuki was quite the enigmatic character when he was introduced in Tribe Nine, but between us, I used to dislike him. He was rude and didn’t hesitate to say cruel words to others. In fact, no one trusted him at first because he was shrouded by secrecy.

Kazuki is wise and calculating. He knows how to analyse information to ideate the best strategies for his team to win, even though he used some nasty tricks at times…

As the story progressed, Kazuki showed a friendly side, although that only aroused my suspicions because I felt he was acting. But he likes cats… So I don’t think someone who likes cats can be that bad, he simply doesn’t know how to handle his own emotions. At least that’s what I like to think…
